Durability of the battery pack is one of the primary issues in the expansion of the battery electric vehicles market. Indeed, the Li-ion batteries suffer parasitic electrochemical reactions over time and use, which alter their autonomy and their performances. Furthermore, some aging mechanisms can involve safety issues leading to the destruction of the battery in a very short time. Predicting the aging behavior of the battery is then a key point to optimize the lifespan of the electric vehicles.
The goal of this internship is to improve the understanding of the aging phenomena to better predict the long-term performance behavior of ACC cells.
The trainee will be integrated in ACC’s expertise center in Bordeaux working with the “Cell management” team within the simulation department. The internship main goal is to implement and calibrate the physical aging models on a pre-defined performance Newman model on COMSOL. It can be divided into multiple subsections that are sorted here under in function of priority for a 6-month period.
Main milestones for a 6-month period internship :
Literature review of the battery aging mechanisms and investigation of the PyBaMM aging modeling technics
Assessing the PyBaMM aging modeling technics into a small report/presentation
Getting familiar with the COMSOL programming environment and the performance modeling
Aging mechanism implementation
Implementing the SEI growth model
Implementing the Li-plating model
Implementing loss of active material models
Proposing a calibration method of these models
Studying the interaction between these mechanisms
Proposing reduced order models ideas
You are a student enrolled in the 2nd or last year of engineering school, or preparing a M1 or M2 degree in one of these fields: electrochemistry, chemistry/materials engineering, applied mathematics
You are proficient in algorithms, you like coding and are interested in physics modeling.
Basics skills in Python is mandatory.
Rigor, open-mindedness, and curiosity
Some extra skills that make the difference :
Familiar with lithium-ion battery operation & aging
Prior experience in the field of batteries (experimental or modeling)
